The 5/15/10 rule
A hashtag strategy only works if it balances three tiers: broad tags for discovery, mid tags for ranking, and niche tags for community. Most creators use 30 broad tags, lose the ranking battle to accounts 10x their size, and wonder why reach is flat.
The ratio we recommend:
- 5 broad tags (1M+ posts). You won't rank, but a small percentage of impressions here adds up.
- 15 mid-tier tags (50k–500k posts). This is where you can reasonably appear in top posts and stay for more than an hour.
- 10 niche tags (under 50k posts). Community anchors. Lower reach, much higher engagement rate.
